We hopped an early flight this am and flew south about 300 miles to Abu Simbal to see the relocated temple of Ramses II and queen Nefertiti.

This entire set of temples (2) was going to be flooded by Lake Nasar.  Both were cut out of their original location and moved and reassembled at a site )high ground) about 250 yards away.

This southern location was chosen as the site to warn the Nubians further to the south, that Ramses II was a SERIOUS warrior and would defend his border.  There are scenes at the entrance depicting the captives from his prior battles in chains.

He depicts himself almost everywhere as a warrior killing his enemies:

The 2nd temple was for his favorite wife Nefertiti!
Nefertari.

The Sphinx: our ship.  Typical of most ships on the Nile, length and width determined by the dimensions of the locks on the River.

Cruising the Nile.  One of the best parts of river cruising is…

Cruising!

There is a second size of cruise “barge” on the Nile.

These are much smaller than our ship, perhaps 10-12 rooms, and they are barges.  Towed by a tug.

Interestingly, there is almost no commercial traffic on the river!

Love,   Dad
